What is the meaning of life?

Recognising oneself as both the whole and part of the whole.

All mystical schools of the major religions and newer spiritual systems share a common basic idea. The idea that ‘All That Is’ is one, but that human beings experience themselves as separate from this whole. We find this idea in Hinduism, Jewish Kabbalah, the mystical school of Islam, and the newer spiritual teachings of modernity. There it is expressed as the idea of ‘Oneness’. It also finds expression in the words of Christ in the Gospel of John: ‘I and the Father are one, but the Father is greater than I.’

Every step, no matter how small, that a person takes to overcome this separation – whether consciously or unconsciously – can be experienced as meaningful and fulfilling. At some point, however, the spiritual seeker will devote himself wholeheartedly to the goal of overcoming separation and experiencing himself as the whole and as part of the whole at the same time. And even if he occasionally loses sight of his goal, he will always return to this path. He follows his inner calling.
